5 Healthy Snacks for Couch Potatoes
Tasty treats that won’t derail your healthy dieting plan. Make a “plan of a snack” for watching the new fall TV lineup.
Can’t take your eyes off of the new fall lineup of TV shows? If you’ve become a part-time “couch potato,” make sure you’re not diving into the potato chips regularly. There are plenty of healthy alternatives that can prevent you from packing on the pounds
Of course, fresh seasonal veggies and fruits are the snacks of choice for healthfulness and thinness. But what if you just gotta have a handful of something that’s extra crunchy? You’re in luck. New research suggests that certain snack foods, like popcorn, provide fiber (which gives you a feeling of fullness) and an abundance of polyphenols (which are antioxidants that keep cells healthy).
But beware of those tempting commercials that tempt you while you’re watching Dancing With the Stars. A study conducted at Yale University discovered that adults eat more of all snack foods – healthy and unhealthy – after viewing snack food advertising. My advice: When it comes to your TV faves, DVR ‘em. Then fast forward over the diet-unfriendly ads to steer clear of the “mindless munchies” trap. (My apologies go to the food advertisers reading this.)
Finally, have a “plan of a snack.” Enjoy a just-right portion of any of these five great-tasting bites that provide a big nutrient boost without boosting the size of your booty!
1. Organic Just Veggies
What it is: Crunchy, dried veggies with nothing added
Snack on it because: It’s a healthful mixture of organic dried bell peppers, carrots, corn, peas and tomatoes that comes in a tub. You’ll still get a variety of benefits that are provided by their fresh counterparts, especially beta-carotene. Plus, this mix is so colorful, it’s like candy to your eyes.
