Did Victoria “Posh” Beckham Quit the Spice Girls – Right Before a New Tour?
Could it be true? Did Victoria Beckham, AKA Posh Spice, quit the Spice Girls? And will her replacement be found via reality TV?
And the rumor mill keeps on churning: Could it be true? Did Victoria Beckham, AKA Posh Spice, really quit the Spice Girls? And will her replacement be found via reality TV?
The Spice Girls have been having something of a resurgence lately; beginning with their performance at the 2013 Summer Olympics closing ceremony and stretching through to the opening of their jukebox musical, Viva Forever, we’ve seen the group back together over the past year more times than we thought we ever would again. And with speculation that they’re set to tour Australia in 2014, it’s no wonder that the rumors are flying about them again.
According to UK tabloid The Daily Mirror’s Sunday People, Victoria was recently overheard at a Justin Bieber concert telling a friend that she had no desire ever to sing again. Allegedly she said, pointing to the stage at London’s O2 arena, “I won’t sing again. I’m not getting up on stage again. You’ll never get me up there even though the girls keep trying to get me to.” A “friend” (you know—those nebulous beings who like to sell their famous pals’ deepest secrets, real or made up, to any old rag that offers them their own 15 minutes) has also apparently revealed to the Sunday People that she’s putting her energy towards her family and her career as a fashion designer: “Victoria will not be performing with the Spice Girls again. She has nothing but love and respect for all of the girls and the journey they went on together. Now, though, her focus is firmly on her family and her fashion business.”
Oh noes! Whatever are these best friends forever to do? Find a replacement for Posh, of course… via reality TV. The Sunday People states that Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell is leading the charge, and that the girls have a “massive X Factor-style TV series” in the works to audition their new member. Allegedly any current or former singers can apply, as can unknowns looking for their big break. The winner will be called—what else?—“Wannabe Spice” (is it just me, or does that sound kind of… I don’t know… insulting?).
But not so fast: Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm, AKA Mel C (not to be confused with “Scary Spice” Mel B) has shot down all these rumors with a single Tweet:
Way to nip that one in the bud, Mel.
It’s easy to see how the rumors could be taken as truth, though. Of all the Spice Girls, Posh does seem to have had the most going on since they went on hiatus back in 2000. She quickly became a fashion icon and model post-breakup, walking the runway at Fashion Week in London (for Maria Grachvogel) and Milan (for Roberto Cavalli) and becoming a British ambassador for Dolce and Gabbana. It was only a matter of time before she moved from styling to designing, and she is now known as much, if not more, for her design efforts as for the Spice Girls. Additionally, although many of the girls are now married with kids, none of them have the high-profile family life that Victoria does (that’s what happens when you start a family with one of the greatest football players of his time—especially one who’s both lovely to look at and a lovely person at the same time). With all of these things going on in her life, it wouldn’t really come as a surprise if she decided to stick with them, rather than trying to become a pop star again.
What’s also sort of interesting about the rumors is that Ginger is supposedly the one who’s pushing to get back together. You’ll recall that Geri is the reason they went on hiatus; after she abruptly left the group in 1998, the Spice Girls attempted to carry on without her through 2000 before admitting (temporarily, at least) defeat. They made a brief return circa 2007-2008—complete with Ginger—and have put in a few appearances at events since then to perform their biggest hits, but these performances are mostly just capitalizing on the nostalgia factor, rather than starting anything new. So the question is, did Ginger realize in the face of her not-so-successful solo career that she had a better chance of being a star if she stuck with the Spice Girls, and is she now trying her damnedest to make it happen? Maybe… but maybe not.
In any event, don’t a) freak out or b) get your hopes up yet. We’re betting that this whole thing is just another example of the tabloids making something up to sell and/or drive traffic to their site. We’ll keep our ears to the ground, though, so if anything new develops, we’ll be sure to let you know.
In the meantime, here’s a little bit of nostalgia to kick your week off right:
