Mean Betty: Gasp! Taylor Swift Throws Out Her Fan Mail – Without Reading It?!
Meanie has some terrible news, kittens: Taylor Swift apparently threw out hundreds of letters written to her by fans—without reading them first. Oh, the drama!
Oh, kittens. Or more accurately, oh, kittens who also happen to be Taylor Swift fans. Meanie isn’t entirely sure how to break this to you, but she has some bad news. If you’ve ever written Taylor a letter, she might not respond. In fact, she might not even be reading them. This past weekend, hundreds—literally HUNDREDS—of letters addressed to the singer, many of which were unopened, were discovered… sitting in a recycling dumpster.
That’s right: Taylor threw out her fan mail. Without even bothering to read it first.
There, there, kittens. It’s all right. Meanie will have the butler whip you up a nice mimosa or three to help you get through this horrible, horrible tragedy.
According to WKRN Nashville, the letters were discovered by one Kylee Francescan, who was doing a little dumpster depositing of her own at Granberry School in Nashville. The letters came from all over the world, and (perhaps unsurprisingly) were covered in hearts, pictures, and glitter. True labors of love, kittens!
Many of them were addressed to Taylor Swift Entertainment, which just so happens to be a—dare Meanie say it?—P.O. Box located at a strip mall. Gasp! Can it be true? How unglamorous! But yes, kittens, it’s true; the owner of the strip mall told News 2 Investigates that Taylor receives loads of fan mail at the P.O. Box, and that someone from her staff picks it up periodically.
Kylee reportedly said about her discovery, “I was like, ‘That’s so weird.’ There were like hundreds of letters in there to Taylor Swift and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh!’” What’s a concerned Nashville resident to do? Take action, of course! Continued Kylee, “I didn’t know if they were stolen [or] discarded, so I threw them in a box. And I’m like, ‘Somebody needs to let Taylor know.’” She did this by way of contacting Nashville’s News 2 Investigates, who took down the preceding sound byte from Kylee when they arrived on the scene to see what they could sleuth out about the situation. Meanie is sure that Kylee is enjoying her fifteen minutes of fame right about now.
So just how did these strange and mysterious letters end up in that dumpster in the first place?
Nashville News 2’s Andy Cordan went on a mission to find out what he could about them. First, he took them to Taylor’s record label, Big Machine Records, who said they were unsure why the letters were in the dumpster. Next, the News 2 Investigates team reached out to Taylor’s management team, who said that they were unaware of the fan mail, but that they were very concerned about it. Said spokesperson Paula Erickson, “Taylor gets thousands of fan letters every day and they are delivered to her management office. After the letters are opened and read, they are recycled. The only explanation for any letters being unopened would be that a small batch of mail that was supposed to be delivered to Taylor was accidentally put with letters headed for the recycling center. We sincerely appreciate Channel 2 bringing this to our attention, and we plan to immediately pick up the mail.” Accordingly, a messenger from Taylor’s PR firm swung by to pick up the letters, leaving us with the vague and somewhat menacing phrase, “The letters will be handled appropriately.”
What does “appropriately” mean? Will they be taken to Taylor so she can read them? Will someone on her team read them for her? (Note, kittens, that Erickson’s statement said that the letters are delivered to Taylor’s management office, not Taylor herself, and that they “are opened and read,” not read specifically by Taylor.) Or will they simply be disposed of in a more, shall Meanie say, discrete fashion? Meanie hears that incineration is very “in” these days.
Now, Meanie realizes that there is simply no way that one lone singer would be able to wade through the mountains of mail that Taylor undoubtedly gets on her own; but at the same time, Meanie and her inherent skepticism can’t help but think that this is probably standard procedure and that Tay Tay’s PR folk now scrambling to cover it up as quickly as possible. Interestingly, Taylor’s Twitter feed has been noticeably silent about the whole ordeal—no “OMG, guys, I am SO SORRY all those letters ended up in the recycling!,” followed by “They’ve been rescued and I’m reading them all RIGHT NOW!,” followed by “I <3 you guys!” to be found.
In all likelihood, this disposal of unread letters will continue to be the norm—only perhaps instead of throwing them out whole, some poor intern will be forced to shred them all first. Whole unopened letters are one thing, but who would have the time to piece together a bag of letters that had been shredded into teeny tiny pieces? Only the most dedicated of fans, that’s who. Assuming, of course, that said fan ended up in the right place at the right time and somehow gained the knowledge through some higher power that this bag of confetti they just found contained the words of hundreds of fellow adoring Taylor Swift fans.
In any event, Meanie does hope that she hasn’t dashed too many of your hopes and dreams, Taylor fans; it’s a hard lesson to learn, that your idols are mere mortals who don’t read every letter ever sent to them. In the meantime, Meanie wishes Taylor’s PR folk the best as they try to brush this little hiccup under the rug. Talk about jobs that Meanie would never, EVER want to have!
