Behind the Scenes: Rihanna’s Custom Givenchy Couture Costume Sketches

Rihanna may be trying her hand at clothing design for day-to-day items, but when it comes to the costumes she wears on stage, she still goes to the best of the best: Givenchy!
RiRi kicked off her Diamonds World Your this past Friday night in Buffalo—and WWD managed to get their hands on a couple of design sketches depicting the “Umbrella” singer’s fabulous costumes. Riccardo Tisci, the man behind the spectacular looks, said of Rihanna, “[She] represents what young and amazing means today. She is punk and talented. She offers intelligence, energy, and pure beauty. She is the face of her generation.” As such, his designs aim to reflect these qualities.

Dark and romantic, the costumes take their cues from Tisci’s fall men’s collection. Among them are a printed parka with a gold bullet motif, embroidery, and Swarovski crystals; a black and white leather bra with golden buckles and star-studded embroidery; and a pair of black silk and satin booty shorts (or “mini shorts,” as Tisci prefers to call them). Rihanna also sports couture goggles, white crystal stud earrings, and a gold metal shark tooth necklace reading (what else?) “RIRI” at the back. According to Givenchy, the costume symbolizes “female empowerment and urban haute couture elegance.”
Alas, Rihanna had to cancel her concert on Sunday night in Boston due to laryngitis—but here’s hoping that fans lucky enough to score tickets for the tour will be able to catch her and her fabulous costumes when she’s feeling better.
