Get all the deets on the Rubin Singer creation Beyonce wore during her Super Bowl halftime show here—and score a wearable lookalike ensemble while you’re at it!
Haven’t heard of designer Rubin Singer? You have now: He’s the man behind Beyonce’s show-stopping costume for her Super Bowl performance. And now that he’s got this under his belt, he’s got nowhere to go but up! Here’s the story behind the ensemble:
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Singer has worked with Beyonce a few times over the years, and presented storyboards from his fall 2013 collection to Bey’s stylists, Raquel Smith and Ty Hunter, shortly after Thanksgiving. After getting the go-ahead, he and Beyonce started on a whirlwind collaboration. Over the space of just two months, the singer had five fittings and the designer put in 200 man hours with a team of 14. Talk about being on the fast track!
The inspiration for the resulting costume goes back to the storyboards Singer presented to Bey’s team back in November. The designer’s fall 2013 collection is entitled “Valkyrie’s Dominion”—and yep, you guessed it: It’s based around the Norse mythological figure, the Valkyrie, who decides which soldiers will die in battle and which ones will survive. Incidentally, he’ll be showing the collection at New York Fashion Week next week. Singer also pulled from images of Helmut Newton from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, as well as from images of Marlene Deitrich.
The costume ended up having two phases to it: During the opening, we saw a cropped leather moto jacket with huge shoulders, a asymmetrical collar, and winged cuffs, along with a micro-mini asymmetrical wrap skirt in the nylon, metal, silk, and plastic material known as “liquid nylon.” Later on in the show, Beyonce ditched the jacket, revealing a leather body suit that contrasted strips of engineered python, paneled iguana, and pick stitched leather with delicate black Chantilly lace.
Said Singer, “This piece is truly couture in every way. My seamstresses were assembling all of the leather and exotic skins individually by hand. All of the pieces were separate details that were all constructed on her body. We had to make the body suit have a tremendous range of motion and flexibility. Beyonce is such a fierce and intense performer we could not have the outfit constrict her in any way.”
