Video: Eddie the Sea Otter Dreams of Being a Basketball Star
Eddie the sea otter suffers from arthritis, so to treat his condition, his keepers trained him to shoot baskets. Meet Eddie here!
Bettys, meet Eddie. Eddie is a sea otter—a sea otter with a dream, that is. What does this adorable little guy dream about? Being a basketball star!
Eddie, a Southern sea otter, was recused off the coast of the California coast many years ago; he was unable to survive in the wild on his own, so in 2000, he was brought to the Oregon Zoo, where he still lives today. Sea otters only live about 15 to 20 years, so at nearly 16, Eddie is getting to be an old man. In fact, it was recently discovered during a routine x-ray that Eddie has arthritis in his elbows, so to help treat them, his vet suggested to his trainers that they find some creative ways to work those joints. The answer? Basketball, of course.
According to the zoo’s lead sea otter keeper, Jenny DeGroot, Eddie learned quickly; he apparently started making baskets in his first week of training. He doesn’t usually miss, but if he does, he keeps going until he gets it. Now THAT’S dedication.
Fun fact: Most of the “tricks” sea otters are trained to perform at the Oregon Zoo are geared primarily towards keeping them healthy. The fact that they’re entertaining to watch is just a happy side effect.
