Mom Jeans? Elle Fanning Dishes on Her Style + Beauty Inspiration
Wondering where Elle Fanning finds her fashion and beauty inspiration? She goes to some surprising sources—including mom jeans!
There’s no denying that the Fanning girls are one of the most stylish sets of sisters in Hollywood. Between their photo shoots, red carpet style, and appearances at runway shows, they’re giving the Olsen twins a run for their money—AND they’re still, y’know, carrying out acting careers and going to school. How they find the time for it all, we’ll never know.
But although big sister Dakota likes getting dressed up for events, she isn’t nearly as into fashion and style as little sister Elle is. In a recent interview with The Cut, the 14-year-old dished on what inspires her when it comes to fashion and beauty—and the answers are as eclectic as she is! Here are some of Elle’s favorite sources of inspiration:
- Skater punk: Said Elle about her jewelry, “I like necklaces that are short, the way skateboarders used to wear them in the seventies.”
- Vintage: Elle is all about vintage shopping, even though it takes an enormous amount of patience to do it. “Yesterday,” she noted, “I went to the vintage store Wasteland with my grandmother to look for clothes. People say it’s so hard to look in there, because there’s so much, but you really just have to focus, get in the zone. I found this amazing floral jumpsuit that’s so cool. I have the patience to look through every rack.”
- Haute couture: Said the actress, “At night, after homework, I check out what’s going on in the fashion world.” These days, she’s especially into playing with eye shadow. She said of her recent foray into the world of pink eye makeup, “I was inspired by the Chanel resort show, where the models had on different pastel wigs, and I wanted to do my take on a sixties eye, but with pink.”
- Mom jeans: No, really. “For a long time,” Elle noted, “I refused to wear jeans. I liked high-waisted pants, but jeans made me feel like I wasn’t being unique. Even now, I won’t wear the skinny-jean style, because most people wear those—they have to be baggier, boyfriend-looking, or sort of like a mom jean. I’m real funny that way.”
