If You Were a Designer, Would You Lend Kim Kardashian Your Clothes? (Mostly No)
Nicola Formichetti had a tough time dressing Kim Kardashian for her ‘Elle’ shoot—because a lot of designers didn’t want to lend Kim their clothes. Ouch!
As you may know (or maybe not—it’s not exactly groundbreaking news, but whatever), Kim Kardashian somehow managed to land a major photo spread in the March issue of Elle. Stylist Nicola Formichetti—the creative director of Mugler’s ready-to-wear line and the mastermind behind a lot of Lady Gaga’s wackiest looks—dressed her for the shoot; however, Nicola found out that dressing Kim is harder than it may appear, largely because a lot of designers don’t really want their clothes on Kim. Surprised? Not surprised? We’re not totally surprised, but maybe that’s just us.
Nicola noted in his commentary on the shoot that dressing Kim was “a challenge”: “People wouldn’t lend me the clothes,” he said, citing the reason as “fashion snobbery.” Ouch! However, in spite of the difficulty, he seems to have done pretty well for Kim; the designers she DOES sport in the photo spread include Tom Ford, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Roberto Cavalli.
While we may not be surprised that designers aren’t exactly jumping at the chance to dress Kim, we ARE a little surprised that Nicola is so gung ho about her. We suppose he’s got his reasons; in fact, he told Into the Gloss in September that he’d been emailing with her. Why? “I saw a picture of her wearing my dress,” he said, “and I wouldn’t have necessarily seen her being that kind of girl—it’s usually the eccentric girls wearing these clothes—but she looked f****ing amazing. I emailed her straight away and sent her a bag yesterday.”
To be fair, Kim’s Elle shoot looks pretty good; she doesn’t look entirely like herself, but that’s sort of what we’ve come to expect from fashion spreads these days. I still find the whole thing kind of funny, though.
