Betty on the News: Depressed Woman Loses Benefits Because of Facebook

A clinically depressed woman is caught up in a battle with an insurance company.

Social networking has many positive - such as the massive blogging community that is currently praying for mommy blogger Anissa Mayhew who suffered a stroke this week - but that doesn’t mean there aren’t negatives.

Quebec resident Nathalie Blanchard is fighting with her employer’s insurance company as it decided to cut off her benefits because of photos she posted on Facebook. Blanchard has been on long-term sick leave for the last year and a half after her doctor diagnosed her with having debilitating depression.

Monthly sick-leave payments disappeared this fall once her insurance agent looked at several pictures of Blanchard supposedly having a great time during a mini vacation – which her doctor recommended.

"In the moment I'm happy, but before and after I have the same problems" as before, Blanchard stated. (CBC)
