In Her Words

We knew you could find great dates at Whole Foods but just to confirm that it really is the greatest of this single spot, we found a woman who not only found her husband there, but also got engaged at the same Whole Foods in Arlington, Va., three and half years after they met there. Now, 10 years later, Lori Hoffer and her Whole Foods husband are still happily married.

Here's her story:

It was January 1999. He and I had both participated in multiple fundraising bike rides together but never met. We even rode on the same day with the same people at different times on one of the rides and never met.

Enter my need for salad. My housemates and I had walked over to the Whole Foods because I wanted salad. I was wearing the traditional grocery store garb of men's flannel pajama bottoms in plaid (note- this is before wearing your PJs out was "cool"). We ran into each other in the check-out line. He was watching us and then said hello to my housemate who also rode in the fundraising bike rides. Then he noticed my other housemate was wearing a University of Michigan sweatshirt -- turned out they both grew up in Ann Arbor, Mich. Then I saw him looking at me and watched his eyes wander down.

"Yep, I'm wearing pajamas" I declared. He laughed. Turned out we lived maybe a mile apart with the Whole Foods in the middle. We started hanging out and doing things together and a couple of months later went on our "first official date." Things went from there and in April 2002 he proposed to me in the same Whole Foods. He picked me up from a class to "get a smoothie". Turned out he was the smoothie and had it all set up with smoothies in champagne glasses, chocolate truffles and flowers. And wouldn't you know it-- he was wearing his pajama bottoms for the proposal.

We are still huge Whole Foods shoppers and are thrilled to have one here in Park City, UT where we now live with our 2-year-old daughter. She loves Whole Foods, too!
