Is Marriage Ridiculous?

By: Jennifer Canzoneri

My husband and I met in college—where I took napping just as seriously as studying and where he was working his way through every Family Guy episode that had ever aired. I like to joke that he offered to buy me a drink one night and that's all it took, but, perhaps sadly, that joke is rather spot on. After that particular Red Bull and vodka, we dated for two-and-a-half years before he mustered enough courage to get down on one knee on a beach in Florida. Nine months after the proposal we tied the knot in Tahoe City, California. It was the best day of our lives, and not just because we had an open bar.

Now we live and work in Texas, and on any given day we argue, discuss our debt, point fingers about whose turn it is to let our 4-year-old dog out, karate chop each other and laugh until one or both of us is in tears. It's nice, this life. Although, heck, I wouldn't argue with someone if they showed interest in funding a second honeymoon that lasted, oh, forever.

Is Marriage Ridiculous? I recently read an interview with Matt Damon, who said that marriage was a ridiculous thing to do. He said it wasn't that he liked being married—he liked being married to his wife. And although I never thought Matt Damon would hit the nail on the head like that, it's exactly how I feel most days.

If it weren't for Mike—my husband—there'd be no point in being married. I don't particularly enjoy sharing my closet space or my bank account with someone. I never become starry-eyed over the prospect of folding someone else's socks for the rest of my life. Defending my TiVo decisions isn't something I look forward to. And, trust me, I never dreamed about spending any amount of time in Home Depot.

But being married to him—the man whose laugh starts in his eyes and who talks to our dog when he thinks I can't hear him and who sacrificed an hour or two of playing Age of Empires so I could type this up—well, I love that.
